Software engineer resume example
This is the resume our Senior Software Engineer template ships with — a dense single-column page that fits ten years of platform work without shrinking below readable, and it scores 97/100 against our 30 published ATS rules. Below, the four bullets doing the heaviest lifting, and what an engineering hiring manager actually reads in them.
Measured by exporting this exact resume and running it through the 30 rules we publish. Certified: we only badge templates at 90 or above, a stricter bar than the 85 our checker calls interview-ready, so the design leaves headroom for your own content.

Why these bullets work
Every line below is taken verbatim from the resume above.
“Own the architecture of the order and fulfilment platform used by 1,100 merchants; 60 engineers across 7 teams build on it”
Scope in merchants and engineers. A staff-level bullet has to show the blast radius of the candidate's decisions, and this one does.
“Redesigned the order pipeline around Kafka and idempotent workers; capacity went from 3,000 to 45,000 orders an hour with no rewrite of the product code”
A fifteen-fold capacity change with the design choices named and the constraint honoured: no product rewrite.
“Cut infrastructure cost 34% ($2.3 million a year) through service consolidation, autoscaling and storage tiering”
Engineers rarely quote money. This one does, with the three levers, and it is the bullet a VP of engineering repeats.
“Built the settlement engine that reconciles $4 billion a year across 6 card networks, exactly once, audited clean four years running”
Exactly-once and audited clean are the two words payments people listen for.
Making it yours
- Rewrite the Core line for each application — this example greps for Java, Go, Kafka, Kubernetes, Terraform; yours should mirror the posting's exact stack, because screeners search tokens, not synonyms.
- Swap the scale numbers for your own truthfully sized ones — 2B events/day, p99 cut 85%, $1.2M/yr saved. A smaller true number (40 rps, $30k) outperforms a borrowed big one in every interview.
- The Highlights line earns its single row: a conference talk, a cert in its short form (AWS Solutions Architect Pro), an open-source project with its star count. Pick your three strongest proofs, not all of them.
- Keep one bullet about influence beyond code — a migration you led, engineers you mentor — because senior and staff screens read for blast radius, not just output.
Common questions
Should a senior software engineer resume be one page?
At ten years, two pages is acceptable — but this example proves one dense page can hold four roles when every line earns its place. Cut the oldest role to one bullet before you add a second page.
Do side projects belong on a senior engineer's resume?
Only when they carry proof of adoption — this example lists a 2.1K-star open-source project and a conference talk in one Highlights line. A weekend repo with no users costs space your scale numbers should be using.
