What to write when you have no job yet

A fresher resume is not empty; it is built from different material. For a M.Tech, the material is this, each line with a number:

• ✓The dissertation as a project with the method, the sample size and the finding.
• ✓A research internship or fellowship with the analyses run and the paper if there is one.
• ✓Teaching assistantship with the sections, the students and anything you wrote for the course.
• ✓Any work between the two degrees, as a full experience entry.

Skills, with the proof that makes each one credible

A skill you cannot defend in the interview is worse than one you leave off. Each of these is listed with what proves it.

Domain analysis tools

ETABS, ABAQUS, ANSYS, MATLAB or the equivalent in your branch, each with a study it was used for.

Research method

Experimental or numerical work with the sample size and the outcome.

Technical writing

A paper, a conference presentation or a workbook adopted by a department.

Scripting

Python or MATLAB scripts that saved measurable time in the lab.

Codes and standards

The IS or international codes you designed or tested to.

The Indian details other builders skip

Marksheets, objectives, the declaration block, the credential a shortlist is actually built on. For a M.Tech:

CGPA or percentage

Print the M.Tech CGPA and the B.Tech CGPA on separate lines, plus the GATE rank and year in the details line: "GATE 2024 Civil, AIR 412". PSUs and colleges both read it. Class XII is optional at this level.

The career objective

“M.Tech Structural Engineering graduate with a published retrofit study and a year as a graduate engineer, seeking a design engineer role where analysis and drawings are released to real sites.”

The credential that gates the shortlist

GATE is the credential for PSUs and for admission-linked fellowships; print rank and year. For teaching, add UGC NET if you have it. A vendor certificate in the analysis tool you use most, with the year, helps for industry roles.

What to leave off

Leave off father's name, date of birth, marital status, religion, caste, nationality and a photo unless the posting asks for one. None of it helps a shortlist and some of it invites bias. Drop the declaration block and the signature line too: a PDF sent from your own email is already yours. Keep the page to name, phone, email, city and one link.

Campus drive or off-campus

For a campus drive, lead with the degree, marks and projects; the recruiter is comparing you to classmates and reads the page in twenty seconds. For an off-campus or Naukri application, move the internship and the role-specific skills up, match the posting's words, and set your Naukri headline to the role you want, not the degree you hold.
